When most people have a headache, their knee-jerk reaction is to reach inside their medicine cabinet and take one or two painkillers. While this solution may work temporarily, it is a short term answer for a long term problem. It is true that some headaches result from fatigue, stress, or allergies. However, if you are experiencing consistent headaches, you may want to consult a chiropractor.
Taking drugs, medications, and painkillers on a consistent basis can have harmful effects on your body in the long run. Various research studies have shown that over time consistent use of painkillers will affect the brain, kidneys, liver, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems. While some people cannot avoid taking medications, for those with minor headaches, painkiller does not need to be the first option.
A study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, studied 218 patients all of who suffered from headaches. They patients were divided into three groups for treatment. The first group was given only medications, the second chiropractic care and medications, and the third only chiropractic care. At the start of the study all groups saw a fifty to forty percent improvement in pain. However, after four weeks all treatment stopped. The group which used medications to treat their headaches lost all improvement in pain. Conversely, the groups who used chiropractic care found that they retained the benefits of chiropractic care. If you have consistent headaches, rather than taking more pain medication, try chiropractic care—the benefits last much longer than any painkiller on the market.
